Advanced SRO Training
3-Day Specialized Workshop
Hosted by Hampton Police Department
Instructed by NASRO
The Advanced School Resource Officer Course is a twenty-four (24) hour block of instruction designed for any law enforcement officer working in an educational environment. This course will provide additional skills and programs for the experienced School Resource Officer to identify and diffuse potentially dangerous situations on campus.
This course is taught in a three day, eight hour format. Classes begin promptly at 8:00 am each morning and run until 5:00 pm each evening. Officers are required to attend all sessions in order to obtain the National School Resource Officer Advanced Course Certificate. Within this course are oral presentations, videotaped practical exercises and multiple discussions.
Day One
Day one begins with an overview of school based policing programs and the history of the SRO program. As the day progresses, discussions allow for the attendee to lead the class in a topic identified by the attendee seeking advice, additional information, or the opportunity to share experiences with the class. Topics addressed include School Administrator/SRO relations, Problem Solving, Causes and Solutions for School Violence, Dress Codes and other Crime Prevention Strategies.
Day Two
During day two, the attendee will participate in specific crime prevention techniques designed for the educational environment. Topics include violence cessation through the use of peer mediation programs, youth courts, and in depth problem solving and crime prevention techniques. Further, a major portion of the day is spent in an overall school safety assessment incorporating Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principals. Hands-on, practical applications are utilized, as the attendee will be required to visit a local school and complete a comprehensive site survey of the campus. Time is allowed for presentation preparation.
Day Three
The attendees will share their security assessments with the group with feedback from all participants. Time is spent examining ways the SRO can work effectively with the media in positively promoting the SRO's assignment within the educational environment, our respective agencies, and critical incidents. The block of instruction on the media is culminated in a videotaped practical assignment. A course review takes place before evaluations, certificates, and closing.
